This one-day course is a practical skills and awareness course which qualifies you as a Mental Health First Aid Champion.
It will equip you with the skills and confidence to spot when someone on your team is struggling, know how and when to offer support, and build the skills and confidence to have mental health conversations.
It also helps to create culture change in organisations, by increasing mental health knowledge and providing a framework for wellbeing conversations.
Who is the course for?
This course gravitates towards training people in the workplace, and it is particularly suited to line managers and supervisors.
It will teach you to do the following within a workplace context:

Recognise the main signs and symptoms of common mental health issues;

Provide initial support;

Guide a person towards appropriate professional help;

Be mindful of your own wellbeing;

Develop an understanding of how you can help to build and maintain a healthy workplace.

• About Mental Health First Aid;
• Mental health and stress in the workplace;
• Stigma and discrimination;
• Depression;
• Anxiety disorders;
• Other mental health issues (eating disorders, self-harm, psychosis);
• Early warning signs of mental ill health;
• Alcohol, drugs and mental health;
• Applying the Mental Health First Aid action plan;
• Action 1: Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis, including suicide;
• Action 2: Listen and communicate non-judgmentally;
• Action 3: Give support and information;
• Action 4: Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help
• Action 5: Encourage other supports;
• Recovery;
• Building a mentally healthy workplace;
• Action planning for using Mental Health First Aid.
What will I get out of the training?
This highly interactive training course combines tutor input with group discussions and activities.
You will learn a first response model to support early intervention, with a framework to recognise the main signs and symptoms of mental ill health, including how to address concerns regarding suicide. The workshop promotes non-judgmental listening and challenges stigma. You will learn to signpost initial help and guidance, support positive wellbeing, and also, how to be mindful of your own wellbeing.
On completion of the course, you will receive a certificate to confirm that you are a qualified MHFA Champion. You will also receive:

A MHFA manual with information, tools, techniques and resources to refer to whenever you need it;

A MHFA workbook, including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health and that of others.

A quick reference card for the Mental Health First Aid action plan.
What is the duration of this course?
One day: 9:00am - 5:00pm.
Unless specified otherwise, this course commences at 9:00am and will finish at approximately 5:00pm. This is applicable to both the virtual and in-person scheduled courses.
